CHAPTER FOURTEEN

"Brody freakin' Westwood! You mated someone!"

Dani's scolding only made his grin even bigger. "I did," he confirmed, walking inside the house. His best friend sat on the couch, baby Jesse in his arms, with his mouth wide open in surprise.

"What the fu…fiddlesticks?"

Brody laughed. It was hilarious to hear Griffin try not to curse around his children, as if Reilly and Jesse wouldn't wind up causing a sailor to blush when they got older. "You know I hate saying this, but you were right, dude. Leah is my mate."

"Who's Leah?" came Griffin's and Dani's well-timed response.

"Carly's sister," Brody said with a satisfied grin.

"I thought you didn't want shifters or magical shit." Griffin gasped and covered Jesse's tiny ears, as though he could un-ring that bell.

"Dude, the kid is nowhere near talking yet. I think you're safe this time." Brody chuckled.

Griffin scowled. "I'm trying. It's damned hard! Fuck!"

Dani laughed and picked up Jesse. "It's time for his nap anyway. You two boys talk."

Griffin stood and walked to the kitchen, retrieving two beers. "When did this mating happen?"

"A few hours ago," Brody said with a shrug, taking his beer.

"Then what the hell are you doing here? Without her? You should be fucking her brains out non-stop for a week, at least."

Brody snickered. "I picked her up mid-shift. I couldn't take it anymore. If you think I don't want to keep her in bed for the next month solid, you are fucked in the head, dude. I think she might be as stubborn as your mate, but in the bedroom…she follows directions well."

Griffin's nose wrinkled up as though he'd smelled something rotten. "I don't want to talk about your sex life, dude."

"Fair enough." Brody chuckled, drinking his beer. "I actually figured it was time we talked about your daughter, now that my mating fever has subsided to a dull ache."

Griffin sat down hard at the dining room table, his long legs stretched out in front of him. "There's not much to say. Fiona won't talk to me or Dani. I don't know what to do."

"She needs time. When the hell did you find out about it? And since when do you and Finn keep secrets together?" Brody took a seat, lacing his fingers behind his head.

Griffin's mouth opened, sucking in a big breath, then breathed out his nose before speaking. "When Adams had Dani, I sort of kidnapped and tortured Finn in the basement of the garage."

"How do you sort of kidnap and torture someone, Griff? I knew you had lost your shit, but…damn! How could you even do that after what you went through in 'Nam?" They had never spoken of their capture and subsequent torture in Vietnam, but Brody couldn't imagine doing that to another human being.

"You're not my judge, Brody! If, God forbid, your mate ever goes missing, believe me, you won't hesitate to do whatever it takes to get her back," he hissed.

"I…" Brody stopped to think about it, and knew his best friend was right. "I'm sure you're right, but what the hell did that have to do with Finn?"

"I thought he took her.
